Goodbye 2012

1. 2012 London Olympic

Writer from Yonhap news. S. Korea's performance at London Olympics voted top sports news of 2012 . Yonhap news, 17 Dec. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013.  http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/culturesports/2012/12/17/17/0702000000AEN20121217000900315F.HTML

In the 2012 summer Olympic games, South Korean athletes earned 13 gold medals, finishing behind the U.S, China, Britain and Russia. Considering that the initial aim of the country was to win 10 gold medals for a position among the top 10, South Korea exceeded the goal thanks  to unexpected gold medals.
2012 London Olympic games gave great pleasure to those who watched them and cheered for national players. I'm one of many Korean fans who waited the game that Korean athletes compete for and were up all night wathcing games.  I respect all players, whether they won a medal or not, because I can assume their efforts are hard and painful. I was so happy this summer and proud of all Olympic athletes.

2. Gangnam style fever

Since his viral hit 'Gangnam style' swept the world in 2012, Psy has been experiencing what he never ever had dreamed of. He became one of the most celebrated world stars in the world.
Psy was just one of  normal Korean singers known for his delightful year-end concert to me. Now he gets on a plane a lot to go from one country to another and it's hard to see him in Korea. Though in some countries 'Gangnam style' just starts gaining popularity, there are also many fans who are bored of the song and waiting for his next album. I hope he will continue to maintain his stardom and enhance national prestige in 2013 too.

3. War in Syria rages

Almond, Kyle. Syria explained: What you need to know. CNN, 24 Aug. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013.  http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/24/world/meast/syria-101/index.html

A street is filled with debris after fighting between Syrian government forces and rebels in Aleppo on January 3.

An ongoing armed conflict has continued in Syria this year. On 2 January 2013, the United Nations announced the war's death toll had exceeded 60,000 and the Syrian government's forces and anti-government armed rebels are both accused of human rights abuses and the abuses are presumed to be the greatest in both gravith and scale.
Tha fact that democratization always requires many people's tears and blood made me sad. South Korea also had experienced Seoul Spring and thanks to those who fougt for democratization, many young Koreans including me are enjoying our proper rights. I'm looking forward to seeing Arab countries get theirs too.

4. Aung San Suu Kyi wins seat in Parliament elections

Fisher, Jonah. Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi wins by-election: NLD party. BBC News, 1 Apr. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17577620

National Leagur for Democracy (NLD) in Burma said Aung San Suu Kyi has won a by-election for parliament. The party also won 43 of the 45 vacant seats. Thousands of people who supported and voted for NDL gathered outside the NLD headquarters and danced and cheered.
This victory is like a wonder in that she had been under house arrest for almost 15 years before she was elected and finally overcame the hardship to become a politician. South Korea also has experienced military administrations. Burma still has a long way to go but I believe the domocratization in Burma would come.

5. Presidential election in Korea

Harlan, Chico. Park Geun-hye wins South Korea’s presidential election. Washington post, 19 Dec. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2012-12-19/world/35929484_1_park-geun-hye-presidential-election-park-cast

On Dec. 19 Park Geun Hye won the 18th presidential election and became Korea's first woman leader. It came out that 51.6% of voters supported for Park and the remaining 48% supported for Moon Jae In of the Democratic United Party.
About half of Koreans are happy now whereas the other haf are not. I actually voted for Moon, so I am in the latter. Some are saying that those who opted for Moon need healing. She earned more than half of the vote, but she should embrace the other half in the next 5 years. I hope she keep her words and make Korea happy and united.

6. Samsung-Apple patent battle

Arthur, Charles. Apple-Samsung patent trial: a guide to the key issues. Guardian, 23 Aug. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/aug/22/apple-samsung-patent-dispute

Samsung Electronics and Apple continued on their legal battle over patent infringement of design and technology in their mobile devices. The two tech giants are extending their battles about new products as well. It remains to be seen who will be the winner of this long-range war on patent.
I was a user of Apple's iphone, but after I realized how easily it can break, I don't like Apple anymore, but I don't use Samsung's Galaxy either. I'm not on the side of the two, but regardless of who wins at the end, a level plyaing field every company can compete on should be provided.

7. Europe's debt crisis

Koba, Mark. Europe's Economic Crisis: What You Need to Know. CNBC, 18 Jun. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.cnbc.com/id/47689157/Europe039s_Economic_Crisis_What_You_Need_to_Know

Europe has been facing austerity. In Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy, striken by debt strikes general strikes became routine. The EU is larger than the U.S. and China in terms of the size of economy. According to OECD, Europe's debt   crisis is a much more bigger threat to the world's economy than the fiscal cliff.
If the EU collapses, the rest of the world (Korea included) take a hit. This worldwide recessions will also have an effect on job creations. I graudate this Feburary. I'm worried that the employment outlook will be bad 2013. As a soon-to-be job seeker, I hope the economy recover this year.

8. Hurricane Sandy hits the U.S.

Writer from CBC News. Sandy slams U.S. east coast with hurricane force. CBC News, 28 Oct. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.cbcca/news/world/story/2012/10/29/new-york-hurricane-sandy-weather.html

Hurricane Sandy devastated the United States and some portions of the Carbbean countiries in late October 2012. It is estimated that losses caused by Sandy are $65.6 billion, which would make it the second-costliest hurricane behine Hurricane Katrina. At least 253 people were killed by the storm in seven countries.
Natural desaster make people helpless and humble, which reminds people of how small humans are compared to nature. I hope the victims of Hurricane Sandy recover from disasters soon and in the process, the U.S. government give a big help to those who are heartbroken now.

9. Obama wins second term

Cohen, Tom. Obama takes key battlegrounds to win re-election. CNN, 7 Nov. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013.

U.S. President Barak Obama was reelected beating Republican Mitt Romney. He secured a second term safely, but daunthing tasks remain before him. The United States is on the verge of financial cliff and still recovering from damages occured by Sandy. He also should care about the relationships between countries around the world too. On the back of people's hope, Obama should pull through.
The U.S. is the most powerful country in the world, although China is chasing it fastly. South Korea also is a friendly country of the U.S. and gets military aides from the U.S. It looks like two countries stay an amicable relationship for the time being.

10. North Korea missile launch

Khazan, Olga. North Korea’s rocket launch: How much, why now, and what now? Washington Post, 12 Dec. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2012/12/12/north-korea-missile-launch-cost-why-now/

North Korea successfully fired a long-range rocket. The rocket is estimated to be capable of reaching the U.S. west coast. The launch will deepen North Korea's isolation. Pyongyang is estimated to spend $1.3 billion total on its rocket program this year, which is the amount enough to buy 4.6 million tones of corn.
Korea is the only divided country in the world and I think the unification of Korea should come true. However, it is pitiful that a hostile act like this makes situations worse. It is urgent that North Korea should change its actions.

11. Relocation to Sejong City

Kim, Hyunbin. First Stage of Move to Sejong City Complete. Arirang news, 28 Dec. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://www.arirang.co.kr/News/News_View.asp?nseq=142604&code=Ne2&category=2

Some of the government ministries, agencies and subsidiary organizations began moving into Sejong in South Chungcheong Province, the newly built city as late President Roh's campaign pledge. The relocation will be completed by 2014.
I hope government organizations' move to Sejong will ease the concentration of Seoul and surrounding areas. About one-fourth of the whole population in South Korea live in Seoul and this makes the quality of life in Seoul metropolitan area very bad. I hope this move will be the chance of balanced developments in Korea.

12. Ahn Cheol Soo syndrome

Bae, Hyunjung. S. Korea parties await reform after presidential poll. China daily, 26 Dec. 2012. Web. 9 Jan. 2013. http://africa.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2012-12/26/content_16056857.htm

Ahn Cheol Soo shakes up traditional politics and became one of the three major players in the presidential elections. His popularity was fueled by the desire for "new poitics." However, He were out of the race in support of the Democratic United Party's Moon Jae In.
I was origianlly for Ahn, and hoped he become the next president. "Beautiful unification" that Moon and Ahn pursued was not realized, which in return contributed to the failiure of the government change. However, the popular desire for "new politics" is still alive and many hope Ahn plays a major role in making that change.
